In the MAX! software there is a menu item "Settings Internet" which asks for a Username and Password. Presumably that is to access the portal? How can I create an account on the portal?

Your assumption is right, ceemjay! :) You can just enter the desired username and password into your Max! software running on your pc and use these credentials to log into Max! Portal.
Just be sure to use the version of the Portal matching your Cube. (There are different versions of the Portal. The right version depends on the shop where you have bought your Max!Cube.)
